The Fall

I opened the album with The Fall because it sets the stage for everything that follows. It’s the descent, the soul’s drop into human form and the strange adventure of material life. The lyric “Falling into the mainstream, falling out of love, find yourself again” sketches the arc: first immersion into modern life, then disconnection from spirit, and finally the struggle to reunite with our own divinity.
I’ve always been fascinated by the idea that we choose our incarnations, that before birth we know the people we’ll meet, the lessons we’ll face, the patterns we’ll repeat. “It was written long before you were born.” But once we arrive, there’s no guarantee we’ll remember any of it. The stakes are enormous. We risk getting tangled on the wheel of karma for lifetimes. Going way down is the soul diving headlong into matter, into the pull of materialism, losing its bearings and trying to find its way out. There are solutions to the dilemma referenced in the song. However those are fraught with their own dark consequences, whether the proposed antidote is any of the socio-economic “isms” atheism, religious dogma, or New Age spirituality.

And yet, the reward is equally high. If we fall and then manage to reunite ourselves with our own eternal source again, we emerge with depth, with perspective, and with the capacity to live with meaning - our very souls grow. A house isn’t the same as a home. The ability to discern between the shell and the essence, to find our way home is explored in the final track on the album, The Road.
The lyrics to the song:
Skipping light across the rocks
Soul testing the pressure locks
Falling into the mainstream
Y’Say you’ve got a better way
Someone’s coming to take your place
I would not count the boy out
And we go way down that hole
Skipping light across the stones
Soul testing the free will zone
As it seeks to find itself out
Play a card and bet the lot
Someone’s coming to get your got
Fall back into the fray
And we go way down that hole
And what you’ll find
You’re not a victim of circumstance
When Wonderful surrounds
And what you’ll find
Is nothing short of spectacular
It was written long before
You were born
Y’say you’ve got a better way
Someone’s coming to take your place
I would not count the boy out
And we go way down that hole
Way down that hole
Falling into the mainstream
Falling out of love
Find yourself again
(Would not count the boy out)
